Not just a pretty red box!

Phone box
Free calls to anywhere on campus

The retro phone box has gotten some interest already but did you know you can use it to make free internal telephone calls to anywhere on campus?  You only need dial the last four digits of the number (the “extension”).  For example, to get out of hours Library and IT help after the staffed desks close, you can just dial 7777.

The old style telephone booth has many happy memories for our staff – you can read reminiscences of the 1950s style telephones, including tricking the phone into giving you free calls.  You might have had a telephone toy like this when you were a child but if not here is a quick demonstration of someone dialling using an old spin-dial telephone and looking at the output signal sent to the telephone exchange.
