Boiler service (Wednesday 13 November)

On Wednesday 13 November 2024, the Library central heating boiler will be serviced. This vital infrastructure upgrade will ensure we heat the Library more efficiently and reliably while controlling our carbon footprint as the University works towards becoming carbon zero. This work is expected to last only for a few hours but you may notice some small changes on the day.

Some areas of the Library may feel cooler than usual. We hope that the building will retain its heat but if it is particularly cold outside the temperature may drop while the work is carried out.

Only cold water, soap, and hand sanitiser will be available for handwashing. There will be no hot running water for handwashing while the boiler service is completed. This will not affect the café or hot drinks vending machine, so you will always be able to get hot drinks.

Tips for studying well and staying warm

  • Dress in layers, so you can adjust your clothing to keep yourself comfortable as the temperature in your study space rises (as people arrive and give off body heat) and falls (if the building starts to lose heat to the outside world faster than it is replaced).
  • Stay hydrated – even drinking cold water can help keep your blood circulating faster, which in turn helps keep you feeling warmer. Drinking water bottle refill stations are available on the ground floor near the café and on the second floor near the toilets.
  • Set a reminder on your phone to get up and move every 25 minutes or so. Studying in planned, short, concentrated bursts interspersed with another activity (finding a new book, walking/exercising, listening to music, or even activities like colouring or origami) has been shown to help you learn and remember more than reading for long periods after you get tired.
  • Move to a warmer space if the place where you are sitting is becoming too cold for comfort.
  • You can always try one of the other open access computer suites on campus if you feel too cold. You can find these in Richmond, Portland, and Eldon buildings. You can find guidance on finding an available computer on MyPort.
