Following an incident of racist abuse turned celebrity worship at a petrol station, Newcastle United goalkeeper Shaka Hislop realised that he could use his celebrity status and influence as a premier league footballer to educate people and reduce racism in society. Back in 2014, he started the Show Racism the Red Card campaign.

Show Racism the Read Card has leveraged the attention paid to sport and professional sports people to help tackle racism in society for ten years now. It delivers delivers educational workshops to over 50,000 young people and adults in schools, workplaces and at events held in football stadiums and hosts the UK’s largest equalities themed school competition. By 2023 over a million people had taken part in its programmes.
