The Centre for Book Cultures and Publishing in partnership with Outside in World, the organisation dedicated to promoting and exploring world literature and children’s books in translation, are delighted to announce the latest event in their seminar series on translation for children. This webinar will explore Jaime Gamboa and Wen Hsu Chen’s El Cuento Fantasma, its selection as part of Outside in World’s Reading the Way project, and how it came to be translated by Daniel Hahn for Lantana as The Invisible Story. Hear from the author, illustrator and others involved discuss the project.

The first Outside In World drop-in and storytime was a great success. Several families joined us to celebrate South Asian Heritage Month and explore the collection of children’s books from around the world and explore the world of illustration with two of our MA Illustration students and aspiring children. Everyone got to take part in the colouring exercise or read fascinating children’s books from around the world, followed by the storytime with another of our students. Yesterday, the University Library hosted its first-ever Global Storytime Event. We invited parents and carers to bring their children into the University Library, where two of our talented students read to them from a selection of illustrated children’s books from the Outside In World collection of children’s books in translation. After this, the children were invited to participate in an art activity, colouring and drawing images inspired by the books.

I am so grateful to our talented students Abigail and Santosh, who engaged the children so effectively, and to all the parents and children who participated. A wonderful time was had by all and the artworks created by the children were particularly fun and entertaining.

Don’t miss the exciting upcoming opportunity to read to local children and the children of our current students during Global Week in March.
