Got rhythm

Got rhythm

Apes lack mobile phones. Therefore they lack personalised ringtones. Don’t they? Well, it so happens that at least one tribe of male chimpanzees in Uganda are banging out unique and distinctive rhythms against tree trunks to announce their presence. Each rhythm is sufficiently distinct that other chimps can easily use it to identify individuals. According to the scientists observing them, these are no simple rhythms either and many resemble rhythms of recognised musical genres, from rock to jazz.

It’s certainly one way to make an entrance and a lot less annoying way than most mobile ringtones.
