Who started International Friendship Day?
International Friendship Day started as a long-term peace initiative by the United Nations. The “International Day of Friendship” was originally proclaimed in 2011 by the UN General Assembly to inspire young people, as future leaders, to engage in community activities that involve different cultures and promote mutual understanding and respect for diversity. International Friendship Day builds on the principles of UNESCO’s proposal to establish a Culture of Peace by adopting a problem-solving approach to conflicts that investigates their root causes, rather than resorting to violence.
