We’ve begun to build on the skills of our enquiries team with a series of masterclasses, aimed at subjects which use more specialist subject resources.  The first masterclass was dedicated to architecture and led by Lizzie, the Assistant Faculty Librarian, and Emily, one of the core enquiries team members, based on frequently asked questions from students.  It was an enjoyable session and included some self-directed learning on Moodle too. One of the resources we looked at was architecture.com the website of the RIBA.  The links on the library website take us directly to their well-indexed library catalogue and the RibaPix image resource, so I don’t often go to the website itself. It has been updated and has lots of basic information.  I guess its aimed at the public rather than students, but nevertheless is has some interesting features.

You can ‘Explore Architecture’ by looking at a range of styles.  For example, Brutalism gives you a range of images to exemplify the style, including Portsmouth’s Tricorn Centre, as well as a short summary and where to find out more.  You can look at all sorts of buildings around the world, including London Zoo with its iconic buildings designed by some of Britain’s best architects.  There is information and short lists for architecture awards, such as the Stirling Prize.  The What’s On section is well worth a visit, giving details of both professional and cultural events, lectures and exhibitions – everything for the architecture enthusiast.  Thinking of undertaking some building work at home?  Then use architecture.com to help you locate a local architect too.  Certainly a fun resource.
