From home to Home Secretary – This Boy by Alan Johnson
I loved this book, which was set in an place and time close to where and when I grew up in West London. This autobiography of the man who rose from a childhood growing up in poverty to become Home secretary has raw impact. The descriptions of poverty and other family struggles, his mother’s early death, and his older sister’s valiant efforts to care for the young Alan are outstanding.
